Stephanie Brockway

Part anthropologist, part collector, their artistic journey has taken many twists and turns. They do not deliberately set out to recycle or upcycle; rather, they hold an object and see possibilities. Driven by a need to build or create something where nothing once existed, they approach art with an innate curiosity. At heart, they are a painter, though they have explored many mediums. A common thread in their work is the use of unexpected colors or materials. Easily bored without a challenge, they thrive on pushing boundaries and creating problems that demand inventive solutions.

The worn, discarded fragments they incorporate range from old fishing floats and vintage household implements to furniture and building parts. Even a long-used, paint-covered brush can become part of their work, its layers telling a story of time and transformation. The unpredictability of wood carving, a subtractive and unforgiving medium, fuels their passion. Each piece of wood presents its own mystery—different grains, different ages—offering the kind of challenge they crave.

Striving for craftsmanship, they seek to elevate the forgotten into something heirloom-worthy. Their style blends primitive and naïve aesthetics with hints of urban decay, destruction, and raw authenticity. In a world saturated with mass production, they pursue simplicity.

Their work has been featured in multiple publications, including two articles in the spring 2013 issues of Art Doll Quarterly and Prims. Other career highlights include an appearance on HGTV’s That’s Clever and a featured artist segment on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Oregon Art Beat in 2018. They have shown at Brassworks Gallery for several years in both group and semi-solo shows. Her latest show at Brassworks Gallery is titled: CONTACT HIGH.
