Kim Slate is an American artist and animator based in Portland, Oregon. Originally from Eastern Washington, she developed a fascination early in life with the power of images to stir the imagination and evoke emotion. Her academic training in animation laid the foundation for a career in the visual arts, including work on high-profile feature films like Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
Her personal art—sculpture, illustration, and paintings—often depicts ordinary and exotic creatures in moments of mischief, discovery, or playful intrigue. Each work suggests a narrative, inviting viewers to imagine both the moments before and after what is shown. When not creating art, Kim enjoys running on forest trails around Portland and traveling with her husband and young son.
